Microsoft Education in Canvas

This article will detail information about the new Microsoft integration in Canvas.

How is Microsoft Education different from the previous Microsoft apps in Canvas?

Microsoft Education acts as a hub for all the Microsoft apps in Canvas, rather than displaying each App separately on the course navigation menu.

All of the apps outlined in the box above (Class Notebook, Microsoft Teams meetings, Office365, Microsoft Teams classes and Microsoft OneDrive) can now be found under the item Microsoft Education, instead.

The apps function similarly to the previous versions, with improvements made for embedding content like PowerPoint slidedecks and Microsoft Word documents.

The video below provides a walkthrough of the new Microsoft Education hub.

What do I need to do?

Microsoft Teams Meetings users

Meetings created using the Microsoft Teams meetings item in a course will continue to exist - in your calendar and in invitee calendars - but will not appear in the course. These old meetings should be removed and rescheduled in the Microsoft Education hub, using the Teams meetings area.

Note: The upgraded Microsoft Education app no longer requires you to manually sync and create a team before using the 'add all students' to a Teams meeting in a course. Additionally, there will soon be a tab for recordings so students may easily access any recorded sessions after the meeting ends.

Class Notebook (OneNote) Users

Class Notebooks do not merge to the new app - if you have already created a class notebook for the 25-26 term, we recommend creating it anew in the Microsoft Education area.

Teams Meetings Users

If you have previously created a Team for the 25-26 term, no action is required of you. It will have merged to the new app and can be accessed in your Teams app, or from Microsoft Education, clicked the Teams (View and create teams) item.

Users with embedded OneDrive/365 content

Existing content will continue to function. To embed any new content from OneDrive (the 365 app is discontinued), use the Microsoft Education button in the rich text editor (in pages, announcements, etc.).

Alternatively, click the plug icon (External Tools) and then 'all tools' to find Microsoft Education in the full list.
